What are suitable bases for a resin driveway?

It’s important to know when thinking about a new resin driveway, can the resin be layered onto your current base? So, is the bass you have suitable? Resin can be overlaid onto existing tarmac and concrete surfaces if they are in good condition and suitable for the expected traffic. Ideally crack free. If there is any chance of movement then you should avoid a resin overlay.

As a rule of thumb the current base wouldn’t be permeable, The Yorkshire Resin Company would need to make the driveway permeable and SuDS compliant.

The ideal sub-base would be MOT type 3, this is because it’s already SuDS compliant, has less fines and therefore less likely to move and shrink when water passes through.

Tarmac

You will find there are different types of tarmac available on the market, they are graded in two ways and these are the hardness and the size of the stone. “Pen” is what calculates the hardness of the bitumen, the lower the rating the harder the bitumen, which means it can be brittle, too brittle and the surface will crack, the size of the stone is measure in “MM” which represents the asphalt content. The perfect tarmac for a resin overlay would be AC14 open textured.

Concrete

This is graded in newtons, a newton is graded in “C” specifications, the higher the grading the stronger the concrete.

Concrete isn’t permeable, which means rain water won’t pass through it, there are different ways to tackle this and that is to drill holes in the concrete or place vertical piping through the concrete to the sub base allowing water to run through. This wouldn’t make the surface SuDs complaint, adding an aco drain on a slope to collect rainwater would.
